Announcing Miro 1.2 - A Major Update

We’ve just released a major update to Miro, version 1.2.

This version adds lots of tweaks and bug fixes that make Miro smoother and slicker. It also lays the groundwork for some big improvements that are coming soon. Version 1.2 is the best Miro yet.
Some of What’s New in Miro 1.2
- On Windows, we updated to XULRunner 1.9, which brings memory and performance improvements.
- We’ve added a much-requested preference to set new channels to not auto-download.
- New preferences for tweaking number of simultaneous auto-downloads and torrent seeding.
- Important re-architecting of the frontend and backend code.
- Lots of bug fixes and tweaks.
- On OSX, we updated to Perian 1.1.
- On Windows, the Miro installer is now much simpler and prettier.
- Improved support for Flash in Channel Guide pages.
- Improved translations for dozens of languages.
- All of what’s new in Miro 1.2
What’s New in the Miro Guide
The Miro Guide is an integral part of the Miro experience. The Guide has had a couple big updates since the last release of Miro.
- Personalized Recommendations: rate channels and get personal recommendations of other channels you’d like. It works great!
- ‘Archival’ indicator: when a channel hasn’t updated in a few months, we mark it as ‘Archival’ so you’ll know that it’s getting a little stale.
- The channel display page has been totally re-designed.
- Nearly 4,000 channels now available!

Nice, I’ve been waiting for this! I really hope XULRunner 1.9 makes it go easier on my system! When will we get a repository for Ubuntu Linux so every update goes automatically?

Downloaded Miro 1.2 for Mac. This is the error message I get when starting: “An unkown (sic) error prevented Miro from startup.” It then closes. Any ideas?

I installed the update. Now I can’t download anything because I can’t even get a connection to any peers. What the heck happened?

Please add some real encryption!! Fucking Comcast continues to block all my torrent downloads through Miro!

1.2 craps out. Won’t download anything. All downloads just hang in the progress bar with “Starting Up”, but nothing ever downloads.

We have the downloading problem captured in bug 9756 http://bugzilla.pculture.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9756. It appears to be a problem with a dll file not being found. Here is a work-around provided by one of our users.
“Shut down Miro and copy the dll files located in the main Miro directory into
the xulrunner\python subfolder where Miro_Downloader.exe is located, then start
up Miro again.”

Any way to see the channels provided without first downloading Miro 1.2? I’m trying to augment the fickle cable system here in Mumbai and would like to see if certain channels are available.

I wanted to clarify the text in the blog entry. It says we updated Miro to work with xulrunner 1.9 for both Windows and Linux–that’s not quite right. We did the work for Windows, but not Linux yet.
The Linux work is being tracked in bug 9692:

When we get it up and working, we’ll probably do a 1.2.2 release or something like that.
